In Jindapur village of Jungle Kaudiya Block, Uttar Pradesh, Babita lived in a large family in which farming was the only source of income. She wanted to support her family but her father believed women should stay at home and focus on household chores.
When she became a part of Breakthrough sessions, regularly attending meetings built her confidence and she learnt how to communicate with her father about her desires to earn money.
She applied for the Drone Didi scheme and despite fierce competition, she was able to secure a position. Her father was resistant to let her travel for training but she conversed relentlessly to convince him. She argued that by becoming more self-reliant, she could further support her family and challenge traditional gender roles, which finally brought him around.
Today, Babita flies a drone to spray medicine and fertilizers in the fields of her community. Her family’s income has grown immensely as she contributes from her income of 25,000 rupees.
